· How: You generally need to file the application or petition in person at the courthouse. While forms can be downloaded online, the filing itself must be done at the courthouse. · When: Minnesota law requires probate to be initiated within three years of death, but starting sooner helps manage ongoing bills and property[2][3][5].
B. Filing the Application or Petition

3. What Happens After Filing?
· Appointment: The court or probate registrar reviews the application and, if approved, appoints the personal representative[2][3][7].
· Notification: The personal representative must notify all interested parties (heirs, creditors) by mail and publish public notice[2][3][7].

· Secure and Inventory Assets: Take control of the decedent’s property and create a detailed inventory (real estate, bank accounts, personal property, etc.)[2][3][6].
